Acceptable Use Policy

This Acceptable Use Policy is intended to help protect our customers and the Internet community from unacceptable use of the Internet. This Acceptable Use Policy describes activities that constitute unacceptable use of our Internet services and outlines actions that may be taken in the event of a violation, including interruptions, suspension and termination of an account.

Be advised that Shentel intends to exercise its rights under the Terms of Service to immediately interrupt, suspend or terminate service, without notice, to any account which has been used in violation of these Terms or which has been used in a disruptive manner. Shentel reserves the right to modify the policy at any time, effective upon posting of the modified policy to this page.

Illegal Use
The Shentel Network may be used only for lawful purposes. Transmission, distribution or storage of any material in violation of any applicable law or regulation is prohibited. This includes, without limitation, material protected by copyright, trademark, trade secret or other intellectual property right used without proper authorization, and material that is obscene, defamatory, constitutes an illegal threat or violates export control laws. In addition, a Shentel user should only make one connection to the Internet at a time. Resale of Shentel service is strictly prohibited.

System and Network Security
Violations of system or network security are prohibited, and may result in criminal and civil liability. Shentel reserves the right to investigate incidents involving such violations and may involve and will cooperate with law enforcement if a criminal violation is suspected. Examples of system or network security violations include, without limitation, the following:

  • Unauthorized access to or use of data, systems or networks, including any attempt to probe, scan or test the vulnerability of a system or network or to breach security or authentication measures.
  • Unauthorized monitoring of data or traffic on any network or system without express authorization of the owner of the system or network.
  • Interference with service to any user, host or network including, without limitation, port scanning, mail bombing, flooding, deliberate attempts to overload a system and broadcast attacks.
  • Forging of any TCP/IP packet header or any part of the header information in an e-mail or newsgroup posting.
  • The use of a camera or Webcam to display continuous live video from a web site hosted on a Shentel owned server.
  • The use of any device, whether hardware or software, that artificially maintains a full- time connection to Shentel’s equipment.
  • Use network resources in excess of any prescribed limits on bandwidth or disk utilization.
  • Disclose your password for accessing our Internet Services to third party or otherwise facilitate unauthorized access.

Residential service tiers are for residential use and may be used only within limits for the service level to which the customer subscribes. Click here to determine data allowance per service level. It is a violation of this Policy to use the service in excess of the allowance for your current tier of service, and you will be charged additional fees as set forth in our Broadband Policies for usage above the allowance. Shentel will attempt to notify you when your use is approaching the applicable allowance threshold so that you may employ corrective or self-limiting actions to avoid the additional fees. However it is your responsibility to assure that your usage is in compliance with Shentel's policies, and Shentel's failure to notify you will not relieve you of responsibility for additional fees. You may check your data usage at any time here at https://account.shentel.com/prweb/PRAuth/LegacyCustomerAccount. In the event that your usage is consistently in excess of your usage allowance, you may wish to subscribe to a version of the service (such a business grade Internet service, if appropriate) that aligns with your usage patterns. Please note that DSL service, available in Shenandoah County and North River service areas only, is not subject to data allowances.

E-mail
The following activities are strictly prohibited: sending unsolicited mail messages, including, without limitation, commercial advertising and informational announcements. Sending unsolicited bulk mail messages ("junk mail" or "spam") which, in Shentel’s reasonable judgment, is disruptive or generates a significant number of user complaints. Using another site's mail server to relay mail without the express permission of the site. Harassment, whether through language, frequency or size of messages or sending e-mail to a person who does not wish to receive it.

Unsolicited Bulk E-mail (Spam) Filtering Services
Shentel may elect at any time to take appropriate measures to reduce the amount of unsolicited bulk email that enters its network. This may include the use of software that detects and deletes unsolicited bulk email and/or viruses from your inbox as applicable. This may also include the use of software from a third-party in combination with other filtering services. While you may be provided the ability to "opt-out" of some of these services, Shentel reserves the right to make the use of some means of filtering mandatory for all Shentel users. Due to the volatile nature of the Internet and its offerings, Shentel makes no guarantee the accuracy of the performance of these filtering systems. Any email message that is identified by these filtering services as unsolicited bulk email may be deleted from the Shentel Network prior to delivery to you without notification to you or the message originator.

Usenet
Complaints regarding copyright infringement should be sent to copyright@shentel.com. Complaints regarding Illegal Use or System or Network Security issues, email abuse, USENET abuse or spam should be sent to support@shentel.net. Where a violation of the Acceptable Use Policy is found to have occurred, Shentel retains full discretion to determine the response that is appropriate in the circumstances, including any one or more of the following actions: issue a warning to the user, remove any postings that violate this Acceptable Use Policy, suspend newsgroup posting privileges, suspend the customer's account, terminate the customer's account, and/or bill the customer for administrative costs and/or reactivation charges.
